Humane Society Yukon Annual General Meeting

The AGM was held 17th August at the Whitehorse Public Library. It was a well attended event, thanks to all those members who turned up.

As a result of the AGM we now have a new board. Some of our directors have continued and others chose to stand down. Our thanks go out to those directors who have left the board for all their work and dedication to the cause of helping Yukon animals.

Jordi Mikeli-Jones who was previously vice-president is now the HSY President.
Tracy Smythe who was previously the administrator at the Shelter is now Vice-President.
Paula Armstrong has taken over the duties of Treasurer.
Annie Griffin is remaining in her position as Secretary.

We have a further five directors, Rachel Westfall, James Kirby, Danielle Noel, Jan Slipetz and Maryanne Baer. Many of whom are new and who are bringing plenty of enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the Society.

  1. Respone to Yukon News Article - Sept 22/10- Your print edition, headline, page one - does nothing to help an already charged issue - The article itself is very valid. From 1988 to 1995 I was a volunteer & active Board member - for the Faro Humane Society which made huge inroads to rural Yukon having services. In living in Dawson City for a short period of time I also served and volunteered with very dedicated people with Humane Society Dawson City. Now living in Whitehorse, yes, we did adopt one of the puppies from the Mae Bachur Humane Society. The sad reality for those of us who love and haved dedicated ourselves to animal welfare is that you set yourself up if you think you can operate on a “no-kill” policy, especially in a remote location such as the Yukon. All 3 Humane Societies at one time had success with adopting animals outside the Territory, but it will never be enough. There will always be people who are irresponsbile - asking others to step up to the plate with homes, finances etc will also never be enough. Hard choices, but with so many other social issues, one that has to be faced. I wish the current board all the best, but it does get to a point where you are inflicting the cruelity by not being able to provide ‘SAFE, SPACIOUS, AND THE FINANCIAL MEANS to support those in care. Please have the strength to say no to any extreme measures that in the end cause more problems.
Thank you from a Proud Yukoner since 1987
